Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of the arts by her aunt Denise when she was a child. The aunt she had was a nurse who worked shifts at night so that she could commit her day to art literature theatre, and various other pursuits. DuVernay was brought to the movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay saw how art was a powerful tool to promote political activism. DuVernay was raised by a mother who was well-informed and taught her how to use art as a method of expression. DuVernay lived in Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and raised. Her father was awed by the historic Civil Rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summers that DuVernay was were later the inspiration to make a film that focused on Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. After graduation she was enrolled at in the University of California Los Angeles where she received diplomas in English as well as African American studies. She was promoted to the position and set up her own PR company known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999. In addition to PR her agency also launched several social media and lifestyle networks, including those like the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
